The USS Iowa (BB-61) and the USS Missouri (BB-63) were sister ships.
The Iowa was the last lead ship of any class of United States battleships and was the only ship of her class to have served in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.
The Missouri was an Iowa-class battleship that saw combat in World War II, the Korean War and the Gulf War. Her nickname was “Mighty Mo”. She was the last battleship commissioned by the United States.
In fact, the USS Missouri has been described as the most famous battleship ever built. Indeed, the surrender ceremony of Japan took place on her decks – the event which she is most remembered for. The Surrender of Japan ended World War II.
Finally, 1992 saw her decommissioned. However, throughout her life, the Mighty Mo received three battle stars for its service in World War II, five for the Korean War, as well as two Combat Action Ribbons and several commendations and medals for the Gulf War. What’s more, throughout her long service, she barely received a scratch.
