The Tank Mark I marked both the dawn of armoured warfare and the start of the whole tank lineage that would soon find its treasured place in almost all armies of the world. It is important to remember that, although a weapon of war, perfected in the art of death and destruction on land, the tank also saved lives, thousands of them. In 1916, the first Mark I tanks helped restore the confidence of the exhausted and depressed fighting men. This was the weapon that would unlock the stalemate and put an end to trench warfare.
The Mark I was the first of a lineage that stretched until 1918 with the Mark VIII Liberty, a lineage which also marked the beginning and the end of the “rhomboid” type in a period of just two years.
It was equipped with two cannons and machine guns. Furthermore, the unique shape of a vehicle enabled it to overcome such obstacles as wire entanglements and trenches. Later on, the wheels in the rear were removed. Despite its initial failures this fighting vehicle became an irreplaceable war machine at every battlefront. The first use of tanks during the war caused panic among the enemy forces. Of course, there was no effective weapon against that type of vehicle at the time.
The tank consists of movable parts like a perfectly reproduced drive system with massive tracks and hatches that can be opened. In addition, it has a figure of a British foot soldier equipped with binoculars.
